What is the holistic approach?

Holistic health practitioners have many ways of healing, but they share a common basic approach. They believe in the ancient idea that healing is most effective when you consider the whole person, rather than focusing on specific illnesses, body parts or symptoms.

As Socrates said in the 4th century B.C., “the part can never be well unless the whole is well.”

Holistic health is a state of balance, not simply an absence of illness. A holistic health education teaches the interconnection of mind, body, spirit and environment—just as it has for thousands of years. Long before penicillin or x-rays, healers recognized the importance of emotional and spiritual well being in achieving physical health.

You might be curious to know, if you are seeking holistic health as an alternative to your condition, that there are certain guiding principles that holistic health practitioners subscribe to. Let’s take a moment and look at these to understand how they are applied to your condition. Overall these guidelines are designed to approach a condition from the source rather than merely treat the symptoms.

  1. Optimal Health. This is the goal of all holistic health practitioners. A healthy body, mind, and spirit is what they strive to achieve for each client. This may take years to achieve so it is important to understand just as Rome was not built in a day, neither will your health be.
  2. Love as a Healing Power. This one might seem a bit far-fetched, but the main premise is that the practitioner accepts you without condition. Regardless of whether your condition was inherited or brought on by poor lifestyle choices, acceptance without condition is the first step to the healing process.
  3. The whole Person. Your body, mind, and spirit are viewed as one unit rather than separate parts.
  4. Prevention and Treatment. Holistic health approaches will treat the symptoms for some immediate relief, but also seek to change some of the factors that contributed to your condition. This ensures you will stay healthy in the future.
  5. Innate Healing Power. Most practitioners believe that the body has all of the resources it needs to heal itself. Tapping into that process is key.
  6. Integration of Healing Systems. The practitioner may suggest some lifestyle changes to correct your condition and to ensure you are healthy in the future.
  7. Relationship Centered Care. The practitioner understands the need for trust that encourages disclosure within the practitioner-client relationship. This is always a priority in holistic care.
  8. Individuality. Practitioners focus on the client who has the injury rather than the injury that has the client. The goal is to understand who you are and how you operate since every person is unique. Once that is understood, treatment of your injury can begin.
  9. Teaching by Example. Holistic practitioners utilize what they prescribe. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
  10. Learning Opportunities. All of life’s experiences are opportunities for both the client and practitioner to learn and incorporate into the healing process.
